Description
One of the most enigmatic publications of all time was the collection of sonnets by William Shakespeare, first published by Thomas Thorpe in 1609. For centuries scholars have puzzled about the identity of of the young man who is the subject of the sonnets and the”dark lady” who makes an appearance in some of them.
Stewart Trotter draws upon a lifetime’s experience in the theatre and the production of Shakespeare’s plays to develop his theory that the Sonnets tell the story of the love affair between William Shakespeare and Henry Wriothesley and that they can therefore be re-arranged in the order they were written.
Accordingly, this book reveals the evolution of the relationship through the evidence of the sonnets.
This is a milestone in Shakespearean studies. The relationship between the two men, through early passion, infidelity, reconciliation and despair can be traced through this reading of the poems.
