Description
Frederick William Bull was an established Newport Pagnell solicitor and was in a unique position to access old deeds and documents held by his office. In an age before photocopiers he was able to patiently copy wills, bequests, charitable foundation documents and other deeds by hand so that they could be printed in his book, which was first published in 1900.
This is chiefly the value of his history and we are able to re-publish this work so that researchers and historians can easily find documents which might otherwise be difficult or impossible to access. Bull’s account of the early history of Newport Pagnell is not much different from Lipscomb’s (published in the middle of the 19th century) or the Victoria County History (published a few years after this volume. However, as a resident of Newport Pagnell he presents very good account of late 19th century history.
The text had been re-set in a modern font and some paragraphs have been rearranged or restyled to aid readability. The Victorian system of indicating footnotes by the use of diacriticals had been replaced by a modern numbering system.
