Description
In 1594 two of the 3rd earl’s closest friends murdered a neighbour with whom they had had a long running dispute. The earl enabled them to get away to safety in France and after a few years of negotiations were allowed to return to England. It has been suggested that Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet was inspired by this sensational affair.
