Description
The 4th earl of Southampton came into his title shortly before King Charles I succeeded to the throne. Charles spent his honeymoon at Titchfield but thereafter had little to do with the earl until he was embroiled in the Civil War.He called on the earl’s services to negotiate with the Parliamentarians in the 1640s and in 1647 broke out of his detention at Hampton Court and came to T Litchfield, where he presumably hoped he would be able to escape to France. In the event he was escorted to Carisbroke Castle on the Isle of Wight.
