Description

On its completion in 1838, the London and Birmingham Railway was a wonder to early Victorians. The line is still in use today, although many aspects of the track and the landscape would be scarcely recognisable. Thomas Roscoe was a respected and prolific writer of the period and in common with several other writers took the trouble to describe the new line for a curious public. Today’s reader will be able to rediscover the fresh eye that Roscoe brings to a landscape which was almost completely rural in his time. This book is a reprint of the original edition rather than a facsimile. The original engravings have been preserved but the text has been reset.
